Turkey Crash Out of 2026 World Cup After Shocking Defeat to Paraguay

Turkey’s long-awaited return to the World Cup after 24 years has ended in bitter disappointment, as their campaign crashed out in dramatic and painful fashion following a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay.

Arriving at the tournament with high hopes and a squad packed with exciting young talent, Turkey were expected to make a serious statement on the global stage. Instead, they leave without scoring a single goal, their dreams shattered after another frustrating night in front of goal.

Despite dominating large parts of the game and playing against 10 men for over half an hour, Turkey simply could not find the breakthrough. They fired an incredible 32 shots against Paraguay, but just like their opening 2-0 loss to Australia — where they managed 30 attempts without reward — their finishing let them down badly.

That staggering total of 62 shots without scoring across two matches is now the highest in any two-game World Cup stretch since records began in 1966.

Paraguay, on the other hand, showed ruthless efficiency.

The South Americans struck just 72 seconds into the game when Matias Galarza unleashed a sensational long-range effort from 25 metres out, setting a new record for the fastest goal of the tournament. It proved to be the decisive moment.

Turkey came painfully close to equalising in the 35th minute when Mert Muldur rose highest to meet a free-kick, only to see his header crash against the bar and bounce off the post. It summed up their tournament — inches away, but never enough.

As the match wore on, chances continued to fall their way, but Baris Yilmaz, Can Uzun, and Merih Demiral all failed to convert, leaving Turkish fans stunned and heartbroken.

At the centre of the emotional fallout was Arda Guler, Turkey’s young star and symbol of this so-called golden generation. The 21-year-old could barely hide his disappointment after the final whistle.

“We tried very hard, but it didn’t work,” Guler said. “We should have scored. We should have won these games. Everybody’s sad, everybody’s crying.”

It marks a shocking collapse for a side that impressed so many with their fearless run to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. With talents like Guler and Kenan Yildiz leading the way, Turkey were tipped by many to be one of the breakout teams of this World Cup.

Instead, they now face an angry reaction back home ahead of their final group match against the USA, who have already secured qualification.

For Paraguay, however, it was a story of resilience and belief.

After a poor opening defeat to the USA, coach Gustavo Alfaro made key changes, including handing Galarza his first start of the tournament — a decision that paid off instantly.

From that moment on, Paraguay dug deep. Their resolve was tested even further when Miguel Almirón was sent off in first-half stoppage time under football’s newly introduced misconduct rules, but they held firm to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Alfaro praised his players’ spirit after the match.

“This wasn’t about tactics or strategy,” he said. “This result belongs entirely to the players.”

For Turkey, the pain will linger. For Paraguay, the fight goes on.Image Jun 20 2026 12 08 22 PM
