Portugal vs Croatia: Ronaldo and Ramos Send Portugal Into World Cup 2026 Last 16

Portugal are through to the World Cup round of 16 after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia in Toronto, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonçalo Ramos delivering when it mattered most.

In what could be remembered as the final World Cup appearance for two football icons — Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić — it was Portugal who survived the late chaos to keep their dream alive.

The game had everything: controversy, emotion, VAR drama, and a last-gasp winner.

Croatia struck first early in the second half through veteran Ivan Perišić, whose clinical finish in the 53rd minute gave Zlatko Dalić’s side the advantage. At that moment, it looked like Portugal’s World Cup journey could be heading toward a painful end.

    But Portugal responded.

Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had equalized moments later, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. The 41-year-old captain didn’t have to wait long for redemption, though. In the 68th minute, Renato Veiga was brought down inside the box, and Ronaldo stepped up confidently to convert the penalty — his first-ever knockout-stage World Cup goal.

The strike made history, with Ronaldo becoming the oldest player to score in a men’s World Cup knockout match.

Shortly after, Portugal manager Roberto Martínez made a bold call, substituting Ronaldo as the game headed into its final stages. It was a decision that proved decisive.

With the match drifting toward extra time, Gonçalo Ramos rose highest in stoppage time to meet a brilliant floated cross from Rafael Leão, heading home the winner in the 94th minute.

    The drama wasn’t over.

Croatia thought they had snatched a dramatic equalizer deep into stoppage time when Joško Gvardiol found the net, but VAR intervened and ruled it out for offside — their third disallowed goal of the night.

The decision sparked fury among Croatian fans, who threw bottles onto the pitch in protest, but Portugal held on.

For Croatia, it was a heartbreaking end to what could be Luka Modrić’s final World Cup journey. The 40-year-old midfield maestro once again showed his class, controlling large parts of the game and leading by example until the very end.

Speaking after the match, Croatia boss Zlatko Dalić praised his team’s effort despite the painful result.

“We didn’t deserve to lose like that. Sometimes football is cruel, and luck simply isn’t on your side.”

For Portugal, there was also an emotional layer to the victory. After the final whistle, Ronaldo honored former teammate Diogo Jota, wearing his No. 21 shirt and pointing to the sky in tribute ahead of the anniversary of Jota’s passing.

The tribute added even more meaning to an unforgettable night.

Now, Portugal prepare for a blockbuster clash against Spain in the last 16 — a fierce rivalry that promises another thrilling chapter in their World Cup story.

With Ronaldo chasing one final dream and Ramos proving he can shine on the biggest stage, Portugal’s journey is far from over.Image Jul 3 2026 06 49 39 AM
