England overcame a shaky start in Prague to secure a much-needed 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic in the Nations League, with Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane providing the goals.
The Three Lions looked far from comfortable during the opening stages and were fortunate not to fall behind. Pavel Sulc had two promising opportunities for the hosts, but England survived the early scare.
Anthony Gordon was one of England’s brightest players throughout the contest. The Barcelona winger was a constant threat down the flank and nearly created the opening goal before the Czech Republic were reduced to 10 men.
Gordon’s low cross found Morgan Rogers, whose effort on the turn struck the far post and bounced away.
England’s task became easier when Sulc was shown a red card following a VAR review. His studs-up challenge caught Elliot Anderson on the shin, leaving the Czech Republic a man down.
Despite the numerical advantage, England still struggled to find their rhythm before the break. Thomas Tuchel responded by making a tactical adjustment, while Eberechi Eze was introduced at half-time to add more creativity to the attack.
The changes quickly paid off.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Gordon opened the scoring. Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered an inviting cross into the area, and Gordon reacted brilliantly, stooping to head the ball beyond the goalkeeper.
It was Gordon’s third consecutive competitive international goal and another indication of his growing influence in the England attack.
Alexander-Arnold later explained that he had spoken to Gordon at half-time about attacking the far post.
“I spoke to Anthony at half-time and I said if I’m getting in the half spaces and putting them [crosses] in, make sure you get to the back post.”
The plan worked almost immediately.
England continued to threaten, with Lewis Hall also coming close to creating another goal. His dangerous low delivery was deflected onto the Czech post by Ladislav Krejci, with Rogers lurking nearby.
The second goal eventually arrived during England’s next attack.
Rogers played his part in the move before the ball took a deflection off Krejci and fell perfectly for Harry Kane. The England captain made no mistake, sweeping the ball home to register his 87th international goal.
It was another milestone moment for Kane, who continued his remarkable scoring record for his country.
With a two-goal cushion, Tuchel was able to introduce Alex Scott and Rio Ngumoha for their competitive England debuts.
Scott came extremely close to marking his debut with a goal, while Rogers and Eze also had opportunities to extend England’s advantage.
Ultimately, though, two goals were enough.
After a nervy and passive first half, England showed greater control after the break and comfortably saw out the victory. The result gives Tuchel’s side a valuable three points and gets their Nations League campaign back on track.
