Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign suffered a major setback on Tuesday as the Super Eagles were beaten 3-0 by Guinea-Bissau in Bissau.
The defeat was coach Eric Chelle’s first since taking charge of the Nigerian national team, ending his unbeaten start in disappointing fashion.
Guinea-Bissau made a fast start and took the lead in the 15th minute. Franculino Dju produced a composed finish, curling the ball into the far corner beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Nigeria struggled to create clear chances in response, while the hosts defended their advantage well. The Super Eagles went into half-time trailing 1-0 and in need of a much stronger second-half performance.
Chelle reacted at the break by making two substitutions. Moses Usor and Moses Simon were introduced, replacing Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi as Nigeria searched for a way back into the match.
However, Guinea-Bissau remained dangerous and extended their lead in the 66th minute through Mama Baldé.
The Super Eagles pushed forward in search of a lifeline but were unable to find a breakthrough. George Ilenikhena came closest in the closing stages, only for Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Djoco Embadje to make an excellent close-range save in the 87th minute.
With Nigeria committing players forward, the hosts eventually found a third goal deep into stoppage time. Álvaro Djaló struck in the fifth minute of added time to complete a convincing victory for Guinea-Bissau.
The result leaves Guinea-Bissau at the top of the group with six points from two matches after previously defeating Tanzania 2-0.
Nigeria remain on three points following their opening 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar.
The heavy defeat will give Chelle plenty to consider as the Super Eagles look to bounce back quickly. Nigeria must now regroup and improve significantly if they are to maintain their hopes of securing qualification for the 2027 AFCON tournament.
