Barcelona midfielder Fermín López has admitted that the past few months have been the toughest of his career after an untimely injury ruled him out of Spain’s triumphant World Cup campaign.

Speaking to Tot Costa on Catalunya Ràdio, the 23-year-old reflected on the emotional pain of missing the tournament and revealed how the support of those closest to him helped him move forward.

“It was the worst summer I’ve ever had,” Fermín admitted, recalling the disappointment of suffering a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot just before the World Cup.

Despite the setback, the midfielder is now focused on the future as he edges closer to making his return for Barcelona. His recovery has progressed well during the club’s pre-season tour of England, and he is optimistic about featuring in the Joan Gamper Trophy against Egyptian giants Al Ahly on August 19.

“I’m feeling better every day,” Fermín said. “I don’t have any discomfort anymore, which is the most important thing. If everything continues to go well, I could play a few minutes in the Gamper.”

Missing Spain’s World Cup-winning campaign was a devastating blow for the young midfielder, who admitted he struggled emotionally during the tournament.

“I got through it thanks to my family, my partner, and my friends,” he explained. “I needed their support. My coach also helped me a lot during that difficult period.”

The disappointment was so intense that he couldn’t even bring himself to watch Spain’s early matches.

“I didn’t watch the first few games because I just couldn’t. I wanted to be there with the team.”

As time passed, however, he slowly came to terms with the situation and eventually travelled to New York to watch Spain lift the trophy.

“Towards the end, when I started feeling a little better, I decided to go to New York and watch the final live.”

Ready to Make an Impact at Barcelona

With his recovery almost complete, Fermín is determined to leave the disappointment behind and make the upcoming season his best yet.

“I’m very ready,” he said confidently. “I’ve already shown how I can help Barcelona, and I want to keep doing that next season.”

The midfielder also echoed the growing belief inside the Barcelona dressing room that the club is ready to challenge seriously for European glory.

“The dream of winning the Champions League is shared by everyone in the squad,” he said. “We’ve come close over the last two years. This season could be our moment.”

He believes the team’s chemistry and experience together can finally make the difference.

“We’ve been playing together for three years now and we’ve gone through a lot. I feel we’re ready to win the Champions League.”

While European success is a major objective, Fermín knows defending Barcelona’s domestic crown will be equally demanding.

“Winning a third straight league title won’t be easy. It’s going to be a difficult season,” he admitted. “But if we stay focused on our football and remain united as a team, I believe we can do it.”

After enduring months of frustration and heartbreak, Fermín López is finally looking ahead with renewed optimism. If his recovery continues on track, Barcelona could soon welcome back a fully motivated midfielder eager to make up for lost time.Image Jul 30 2026 08 34 19 AM
