Inter Miami vs Chicago Fire: Messi Ruled Out as Robert Lewandowski Set for MLS Debut

Major League Soccer is back following the 2026 FIFA World Cup break, and one of the standout fixtures sees Inter Miami welcome Chicago Fire to Nu Stadium in a clash between two Eastern Conference heavyweights.

Inter Miami heads into the encounter sitting second in the conference with 31 points, while Chicago Fire is just behind in third. With both clubs enjoying strong runs of form, fans can expect a fiercely contested battle as the race for the top of the standings resumes.

However, Inter Miami will have to overcome a major selection headache. Head coach Guillermo Hoyos is without eight first-team players, leaving the squad stretched for one of its biggest matches of the season.

The most notable absentee is Lionel Messi, who is being rested after helping Argentina reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. Fellow midfielder Rodrigo De Paul will also miss the game for the same reason as the club carefully manages the workload of its returning international stars.

In addition to Messi and De Paul, Inter Miami will also be without Tadeo Allende, David Ayala, Maximiliano Falcón, Gonzalo Luján, Santi Morales, and Alex Shaw, forcing Hoyos to rely on the depth of his squad.

While Inter Miami deals with key absences, Chicago Fire arrives with plenty of excitement surrounding its newest superstar. Polish striker Robert Lewandowski is expected to make his long-awaited MLS debut after completing his move to the club. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich forward is likely to spearhead Chicago’s attack and will be eager to make an immediate impact.

History also favors the visitors. Chicago Fire has enjoyed the upper hand in recent meetings, holding a 5-3-2 advantage in the all-time MLS regular-season series against Inter Miami. Their last trip to South Florida produced an unforgettable 5-3 victory in late 2025, a result the Herons will be determined to avenge.

Despite missing several star players, Inter Miami enters the match in excellent form, having won four consecutive league games before the World Cup break. Chicago Fire has also built momentum with three straight victories, setting the stage for a high-quality contest between two of the Eastern Conference’s most in-form sides.

With Messi unavailable and Lewandowski poised for his MLS debut, the spotlight shifts to whether Inter Miami can maintain its winning run or if Chicago’s new marquee signing can inspire a statement victory on his first appearance. The outcome could have significant implications in the battle for Eastern Conference supremacy as the MLS season resumes.
